James and I apologize for the fact that we have not had a newsletter in a while. The last couple of months have been crazy with our trying to move into our new home in Hot Springs, Arkansas. We have worn a path between there and Gainesville, Texas with all the trips we have had to make moving our stuff out of storage and into our new home. I think that our vehicles know the way now without us having to steer. In between the trips we have been unpacking boxes, marveling at things that we have forgotten that we had, wondering about why we have some things, and organizing both the business and the household as we go along. We are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. This month we started our show circuit again and we have been having fun connecting with all our friends we see while we are on the road. We also found some new, and exciting material that we can't wait to see how it cuts and then share it with all of you.

I decided to do a newsletter on the most common fossils this month. It isn't in depth since this is not an area that I am well versed in, but I figured just the basics might peek some people's interest to do more depth research on their own. I have not done much in the way of hunting for fossils myself, except for what I have stumbled on when I am hunting for other rocks. James, my dad, and I have found stones with fossils in them in gravel piles and quarries in our rockhounding ventures, but nothing as spectacular as the following.

ORTHOCERAS INFO

The orthoceras fossils mainly come from the Atlas Mtns of Morocco. They are dated to the silurian age (+400 million years old). Being a cephalopod, orthoceras was similar to the modern squid except orthoceras had a straight or slightly curved shell. Another way to describe the orthoceras would be a nautilus with a straight, pointed shell.

These very primitive members of the phylum cephalopoda are similar to the Ammonite, with a straight shell. Approximately 400 million years old, Orthoceras are the ancestral cousin of the modern squid or ocotopus. The word Orthoceras means "Straight Horn", and refers to its shape. All Orthoceras have chanbers separated by walls called Septa. They also have a tube that runs down the center of the fossil called a Siphuncle. It is believed that this tube was used to carry gas into the chambers to control the buoyancy of the shell. The orthoceras from Morocco occur as white fossil in a dark gray or black marble matrix and also in a brown marble matrix. The result is a fossil with very good contrast.

Is it good for lapidary?
I have not seen any orthoceras as jewelry. I have seen it as decorative stone for home decor such as natural sculptures, dishware, candleholders, eggs, etc. An orthoceras is best shown on a larger scale than as a jewelry piece.

AMMONITE INFO

The word ammonite is derived from the name of the Greek God "Ammon", that appeared with rams horms on his head. Members of the phylum Cephalopoda, these are the distant ancestors of the chambered nautilus. The animal that lived in these shells looked something like a Squid or an octopus, with tentacles for grasping it's food and moving around the ocean floor. It is speculated that Ammonites ate Trilobites and other small animals. There are several different species of Ammonite. Some were found in Morocco up to 6 feet across in size, while others never got any bigger than a dime.

An ammonite is a cephalopod which once swam in shallow marine seas and became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period (65 million years ago). The closest living relative to the ammonite is the chambered nautilus. Like the chambered nautilus, the ammonite's ability to swim was due to the unique construction of its shell. The shell contained many air filled chambers, called the phragmocone. The "walls" of each chamber, called septa, were penetrated by a tubelike structure called a siphuncle. It is believed that the air in the chambers was regulated through this "tube". The air in the chambers provided buoyancy, which allowed the ammonite to float. The ammonite lived in the last chamber, which ranged in size from a half of a whorl to one and a half whorls of the shell. The animal protruded out the end of its shell through the aperture.

History - In ancient Egypt, the ammonite was seen as a symbol of any deity that was connected with the ram and its curved horns. They were considered the sacred stone of Ethiopia. In 656 C.E. at the Whitby Abbey in England, one legend says there lived a sainted nun named Hilda. At this particular time in history, the surrounding moors and the River Esk were infested with poisonous snakes, or so the story goes. The sainted Nun, Hilda, supposedly prayed for protection of the people, and the snakes supposedly coiled up, rolled off the cliffs, and turned instantly into stone, thus producing the ammonites.

Is it good for lapidary?
Small ammonites that have been cut in half to show the interior chambers are great for pendants, or even ear-rings. Ammonite halves all have individual personalities with different colors, open chambers, or druzy filled, or completely filled in chambers. A whole ammonite could be carefully cut in half to show the interior, polished, and then set for jewelry.

AMMOLITE INFO

Ammolite is the preserved mother-of-pearl of the ammonite that has gone through an, as yet, unexplained geological and mineralization transformation - giving it the light refracting qualities that make it a precious gem. Ammolite is capable of splitting sunlight into every color imaginable, which makes it desired material for fantastic high-end jewelry pieces.

Is it good for lapidary?
Ammolite is very tricky to use for lapidary. Not all the material is stable enough to cut as gemstones. There is some very solid material out there that can be cut and set for jewelry without any stabilization, but very hard to find, and comes at a high price because of the rarity. Most ammolite that is cut into cabochons has been made into doublets or triplets in order to make it durable enough to be used in jewelry, much like a lot of opal. It takes patience to work this material. Before attempting to work this material, consult someone who has worked this material for advice on "how to" cut this material.

BACCULITE INFO

A bacculite is simply a straight ammonite. That means it does not have the coiled look, but instead, is straightened to its full length.

Is it good for lapidary?
I have not seen any of the bacculites in jewelry, or as cut stones. I have only seen them as specimens. I could see the bacculite being cut in half in order to see the chambers, just like the ammonite.

TRILOBITE INFO

Trilobites are said to have existed some 300 million years ago which means they existed before Dinosaurs roamed the earth. They are the first of the arthropod group which is a phylum of hard-shelled creatures with multiple body segments and jointed legs. Arthropods covers a wide range of creatures that fall into this category from insects to crustaceans (or, in other words, spiders to crabs and lobsters). So a trilobite is an ancient version of our common household spider, or lobster dinner.

Is it good for lapidary?
Trilobites are rarely seen in lapidary. Usually they are too big to try to do anything. Occasionally you will see a pendant made from a smaller trilobite. I am not sure of its durability in regards to lapidary. I would research this before trying.

What do people do with fossils?

First off there is the whole world of palentology, and the serious collectors that go with it. Fossils appeal to all ages and no one can deny the sense of wonder that a fossil evokes. After all, a fossil is a preserved piece of our planets history. Holding a fossil in one's hands starts a flood of questions, that are not always vocalized, such as "how come these creatures back then were so big?", or "what did this creature eat and what did its dinner look like?", or "what did the area around them look like then?", and the questions just keep coming. Fossils are studied by today's scientists to learn and understand how our planet has changed, as well as the organisms that have lived on it. Fossils are record keepers of our planets history. So much is learned from studying fossils.

Fossils have found a market in home decor items. Large plates of several ammonites in matrix, that have been mined out of quarries, become beautiful pieces of natural art in the home. Dishware, vases, sculptures, and other display pieces are made with fossils. Smaller fossils are made into beautiful pieces of jewelry.

Hello everyone, we are very happy to be in our new home in Hot Springs, Arkansas. We are still arranging things, sorting things, and getting familiar with our new home town. We are enjoying it a great deal and even went out on a couple of field trips here. James finally has a place to begin working on cutting new material.

What is Pyrite?
The work Pyrite is derived from a Greek word, Pyr, that means fire which occurs when you strike pyrite with a metal object because it will spark. It is a minor ore of sulphur for sulphuric acid, which means it falls in the sulfides group. The color is a brassy yellow, which makes it often mistaken for gold. What distinguishes it from gold very quickly is the fact that it is harder than gold. It's hardness is 6.5 and gold is 2.5 - 3 in hardness. It occurs in Sedimentary, magmatic, metamorphic, and hydrothermal deposits. It is most often found as a cube, but it can be found in octahedron, pyritohedron, and combinations of all of these. Pyrite is found around quartz, gold, galena, fluorite, calcite, and sphalerite.

Where is Pyrite found?
Pyrite is actually found worldwide. It has been found in ancient civilizations by archeologists in Greece, Rome, and Peru to name a few. Some of the most noteworthy locations are Illinois, Arkansas, and Missouri/USA, Peru, Germany, Russia, Spain, and South Africa. I have seen some awesome pyrite cubes that have come out of Spain, still in their matrix, that are really awesome.

Does pyrite take on other forms?
Yes, pyrite often replaces other minerals or fossils. There are some very nice ammonites from Russia that are completely or partially replaced by pyrite. I have even seen pyritized pine cones.

What is the stones history?
Not everyone knows the term pyrite, but most people have heard of "Fools Gold". There were many a miner in the gold rush days that were fooled by pyrite. Miners were not to fond of it for that reason, and because it also caused mine fire when exposed to air and water. Pyrite was polished by the Native Americans, and cultures of ancient Mexico, in the early times and used as mirrors. I would have to say after doing lots of shows over the years, pyrite is the most popular stone with kids. They are just facinated with the shape, the metallic shine it has, and the fact that it is something they have heard of by the name of Fools Gold.

What are its uses today?
Today, it is used as an ornamental stone, as well as a very popular stone for the amateur collector. Pyrite is the stone that often peaks a childs interest in rockhounding. Its shape and sparkle excites kids of all ages. Exquisite quartz specimens from Peru include pyrite giving the specimen a striking contrast of the clear quartz points with pyrite cubes between the points.

How is it to cut?
Our only experience with cutting pyrite is when it is in another material that I happen to be cutting. In fact, James recently cut Aegerine (from Arkansas) which is a porphyrytic stone with pyrite in it. It has a great contrast of black with the pyrite in it. Pyrite is "generally" not a stone that is cut for jewelry by itself. However, I could see it used as an accent stone quite easily.
